Mission.

Design a new cordless Dremel Multi max tool for Bosch based on the existing family line of corded tools. Design around existing German lithium ion battery and interior mechanisms.

RESEARCH.

Ethnographic Research.

I immersed myself in the product and tested out all of it’s capabilities in order to understand the user better. I didn’t just scribble a few things but actually gave myself tasks to complete. I was also given the opportunity to go to Bosch headquarters outside of Chicago to take part in user testing.

Family Line.

Understanding branding and how to make the family line of products cohesive was important for this project. I made sure color and style was consistent. In this case I created the first design with the 8200 Dremel and the rest of the line followed my original design cues.

Internal Mechanisms.

Bosch engineers shared the Internal mechanisms so I was able to use it as an underlay for my sketches and better understand internal components.

Rapid Ideation Sketching.

First initial brainstorm sketches to get ideas flowing for form and function. Ideas where presented to design managers at Bosch and certain features and looks where chosen for further exploration.

Presentation Concept Sketches.

Chosen sketches and features were further defined by adding color and texture mimicking a more realistic product. This is a quick way to show design intent before 3d modeling which can be very time consuming process.
