Mission.
Design wall mounted and freestanding hand sanitizers for Virgin Voyages new Scarlett Lady Cruise ship based on internal mechanism specs from the manufacturer.
RESEARCH.
Existing Cruise Ship Sanitizers.
After an audit of the hand sanitizers that are currently being used on cruise ships (and on land), it was apparent that they lack design and sometimes functionality. Virgin made it clear that they wanted something very different from the current market and unique to their brand.
Product Data Sheet.
Virgin already had a trusted manufacturer, so the given product sheet had all of the core measurements and internal component data needed.
Inspiration.
Pulled from all kinds of different home and nautical sources.
BRAINSTORMING.
Digital Sketches.
This is where I explored all kinds of wild ideas coming from my inspiration board and with attention to the dimensions from the product data sheet. Virgin chose the 4 circled ideas to move forward with.

CONCEPT REFINEMENT.
Selected concepts from the brainstorming phase are further refined and given more detail. The following 4 concepts were presented to key executives and narrowed down to 2.
Concept 1.
Classic rounded rectangle design with inspiration from Graffiti Artist Tom Bob on the side panel. The slot was meant to be located on the side, so I wanted to create a graphic or hole pattern to better integrate it.
Concept 2.
Inspired by the pill form seen in many different popular products from furniture to electronics.
Concept 3.
What if the hand sanitizer was made to look more like a piece of furniture that would blend more into its different environments?
Concept 4.
This concept took on more of a Danish furniture look with it’s rounded shape and bent wood drip tray. The bent material could be interchangeable with different color woods and materials based on location.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT.
Selected concepts (1 & 2) are further defined by 3d modeling and designing the freestanding version. This freestanding version was designed to allow for the the wall hung unit to snap in and out as needed to save on manufacturing.
Color Study (gangway).
The freestanding units would be mostly used at the gangway in front of the ship, it made sense to use colorway’s that integrate nicely with the environment they would be in.
Freestanding Sketch Exploration.
Some quick sketchies to find the best solution for the freestanding versions of the chosen wall hung designs.
Concept 2 Development.
Concept 1 was dropped, and Concept 2 was chosen to move forward with further development and refinement.
Color Studies (Arcade).
What could it look like in different environments? Keeping the red ring constant will help sailors to identify the hand sanitizers even when the colors or materials may have changed.
Champagne Lounge.
The color and material way inspirations from the champaign lounge are reflected in the Carrara marble base, brass metal stand, and the white gloss sanitizer base unit.
Engineering Handoff and Communications.
Initial drawing with rough dimensions in mm and inches sent to engineers in Germany.
The manufacturer made some updates to the internal parts. They made the switch from a transparent plastic fluid bottle to a metal bottle for sustainability. This change eliminated the need for the open slot on the side thus changing the design a bit.
Graphic Direction.
I made a mood board in order to communicate to the graphics department the desired direction for the art work.
Direction Droplet.
Droplet graphic was chosen and also a drip tray pattern that resembles graphics found in way finding aboard the Scarlett Lady ship. These are the final color + material specs.
Product Sample.
First prototype photos sent by the manufacturer. Lookin good! :)
